This is Just a Fantastic Song ~ Funny How We Forget Such Wonderful Songs.
It’s Just as True Today as it was when it was released in 1971
From what I remember, Marvin Gaye was not a political activist, but as an artist, songwriter he apparently took advantage of an oppotunity to be relevant at the time. The words to the song (below)
do have a quality of liberalism. (i.e. the lyric about the long hair). They don’t seem as relevant now as
they did at the time, but this was supposed to after all be a protest song.
Marvin was a gifted artist, but I’m disappointed that he did not turn his gifts back toward the giver of the gift and glorify God with his life. I understand from WikiPedia that Marvin began his singing career (like many renowned artists) in his Father’s Church.
While some may disagree with the lyric “only love can conquer hate”… we are not talking about the kind of love that puts its head in the sand, sweeps everything under the carpet and/or becomes a doormat. Tough Love is needed quite often toward those who hate us. There will be, of course, be those who disagree with me, that is their right and their privilege but sometimes war IS the answer, so that our enemies do not overtake us.
But it is absolutely a Biblical Truth and has been proven since the beginning of time that Love does conquer hate. And that is why I think this is a terrific song.
What’s Going On
Mother, mother There’s too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother There’s far too many of you dying
You know we’ve got to find a way To bring some lovin’ here today – Ya
Father, father We don’t need to escalate
You see, war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we’ve got to find a way
To bring some lovin’ here today
Picket lines and picket signs don’t punish me with brutality
Talk to me, so you can see Oh, what’s going on
What’s going on .. Ya, what’s going on … Ah, what’s going on
In the mean time Right on, baby
Right on .. Right on
Father, father, everybody thinks we’re wrong
Oh, but who are they to judge us
Simply because our hair is long
Oh, you know we’ve got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today … Oh
Picket lines and picket signs Don’t punish me with brutality
Talk to me So you can see
What’s going on … Ya, what’s going on
Tell me what’s going on … I’ll tell you what’s going on – Uh
Right on baby … Right on baby
